Whether it's Thanksgiving or your just want to make your kitty a tasty treat using your leftover turkey scraps, you can use this recipe to create a turkey loaf recipe that will make your cat beg for more. It's an easy process, and you'll be rewarded with kitty's enjoyment of your cooking.
Feline Turkey Loaf
Thanksgiving is upon us and it is time we give a small thanks to our four-legged friends. In this week's tips I wanted to give you a fun and easy recipe to make for your favorite feline. This one freezes for weeks at a time, allowing you to have a safe to eat, homemade turkey dinner for your cat for the entire holiday season.
Remember never feed your cat from the table. Besides the fact that this is a habit you don't want to encourage, it could be dangerous; as food from the table can have too many spices, or onions or raisins in it (which are toxic to cats), so be cautious about foods and plants that are poisonous to cats. However, I know we love to include our cats, so here is a great turkey loaf that freezes well and even makes a great holiday cat gift. Bon appetite.
Turkey Loaf Recipe
Ingredients
- 1 can turkey meat or turkey leftovers (save liquid from can)
- 2-3 cups plain bread crumbs (reserve 1 tablespoon of bread crumbs for top)
- 3 egg yolks, well beaten
- ½ cup milk (you can substitute powdered non-fat dry milk and add water to it)
- ¼ cup butter
- ½ cup mashed sweet potatoes
- 2 tablespoons julienne carrots, cooked (regular carrots can be substituted)
- 3 egg whites, very stiffly beaten
- 1 teaspoon dried fish flakes
- 1 teaspoon brewers yeast
- 1 teaspoon anchovy paste mixed with 1 tablespoon catsup
Directions
- Pre-heat your oven to 350 degrees.
- Spray a loaf pan with non-stick spray.
- Drain canned turkey meat and reserve liquid; or your leftover turkey (make sure cooked through) and place in a blender.
- Add sweet potatoes and carrots to turkey and blend well.
- Heat your milk, add butter, and simmer until just boiling. Remove from heat and let stand for 5 minutes.
- In a separate bowl, whip the egg yolks. (You can also add parsley or catnip.)
- Add liquid reserved from canned turkey or some of the drippings from the turkey pan to the egg yolk mix, and blend until smooth.
- Add ingredients from blender to egg yolks and mix well.
- Add milk/butter mix to egg yolks and blend well.
- Add the bread crumbs, saving a tablespoon for the top, and mix well.
- Now fold in your egg whites, this helps to make this dish fluffy.
- Pour into a well greased loaf pan.
- Spread anchovy paste mixture across the top of loaf. (This makes a wonderful crust.)
- Sprinkle with dried fish flakes, and reserved bread crumbs.
- Bake for at least 1-1/2 hours until done. (A toothpick inserted in center of loaf should come out clean.)
- Remove from oven, and let cool. After cooling, slice into sections about 1/4 inch thick and serve to kitty.
This recipe is one of my favorites and it freezes well. Now you and your feline friend will both be very happy through the holidays.
